Vancouver Guerrilla Gardening Meet

gardening vancouver group Click through for more pics of this Vancouver community gardening group.

A very diverse group with many interests and agendas. Some want to plant flowers in grey/concrete spaces. Others want to grow food in abandoned spaces and community gardens. Some have access to garden and growing space while others don’t.

Bonsai From Longwood Gardens

garden longwood ginko biloba bonsai Click through for more bonsai pictures from the Longwood Gardens.

Laura reminded me by her comment to my Ginkgo biloba post to look at the three photos of bonsai my friend Rosa took at Longwood Gardens on April 29, 2005. One of them is a Ginkgo biloba tree! So here’s the recognizable leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree that one of my books says looks like duck’s feet:

Ujjayanta Palace

garden ujjayanta palace If you're traveling in India, check out the gardens at the Ujjayanta Palace.

Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya built this royal house over a one Sq. km property in Agartala between 1899 and 1901. It is a two storied mansion, having a mixed type of architecture with three high domes, the central one being 86’ high. The magnificent tile floor, curved wooden ceiling and beautifully crafted doors are particularly notable. The palace is set with huge Mughal style gardens, beautified by pools and gardens and tiled floors.

Mulch In The Landscape

garden landscaping ideas mulch Lots of good reasons to use mulch in your landscape.

They may not eliminate all you duties in the garden, but you do not want to get on your hands and knees weeding everyday either. Not wasting all your time in the garden is just one of the reasons why you should use mulch in your landscaping ideas.

Developing A Second Life

garden water feature garden pond Even online you need water features.

Upstairs is a lounge and outdoor setting. Way up in the sky is a Skybox where friends can meet and play with their appearance or try out new objects. I’ve a big empty building that I’m hoping will be used as small auditorium for presentations (might have to reduce the number of prims in use on the parcel though). Down the other end of my block is a nice little gazebo and a duck pond. There are a few water features and some plant and animal life. The weather is still unpredictable. A crackling fireplace, some music upstairs, an annoyingly chatty parrot make it seem both more peaceful and chaotic.

Tabacon Resort

garden water features tabacon resort If you're in Costa Rica, check out the water features at the Tabacon Resort.

Located in Arenal, Costa Rica, the Tabacon Resort is a must see. You can stay in the resort or else you can just visit the hot springs. It’s one thing to read about but an entirely different thing to experience. It’s like a large well manicured garden with lots of different waterfalls, hot springs, pools, and other water features. As you experience the different hot springs you will notice some are scorching hot while others are quite cool. All of them are heated by the nearby volcano. If you want a visual experience like no other as well as a relaxing soak in a variety of different hot springs then Tabacon Resort is a must see.

Design A Great Kitchen

garden kitchen design Kitchen design tips from Better Homes and Gardens.

I decided I wanted to do it right, so we read as much as we could on the options. One of my favorite books on kitchens was Better Homes and Gardens Kitchens Dream it. Plan it. Remodel it. I found this book to be extremely helpful. The first point they made was the placement of the “kitchen work triangle”. The work triangle consists of the fridge, the sink, and the cooktop or range.

Soil Conservation Commission

If you're in the North Carolina area, you might want to check out this soil conservation meeting.

Also on the evening’s agenda for those of you in the Piedmont, is a hearing of the legislative Land and Soil Conservation Commission. Stop by if you can. 7 p.m. Greensboro - Guilford Technical Community College, Auditorium, 601 High Point Rd., Jamestown. Worried about global warming, loss of forests and disappearing farms? These are the folks who will be writing legislation to try and deal with these things. Land for Tomorrow has more on the ideas.

Buenos Aires

japanese garden buenos aires Japanese gardens in Buenos Aires?

I was intrigued when my coworker talked about this beautiful city, and now I’m even more so. Buenos Aires looks amazing with lots of great things to do and places to see, like the Japanese Gardens with the Koi fish, or Plaza Dorrego, a weekly outdoor festival and shopping extravaganza. Man, every city should do this - they close down the neighboring area to traffic and set up this open-air market. Fun!

Rocky Landscaping

gardens mount vernon Trading off civic priorities in Mt. Vernon between landscape rock and other priorities.

Another item that I found odd was the new landscaping rock and signs posted near the interstate in front of Hardees and again at the railroad tracks in front of Ford Square. Did we not have some other way to use funds than to buy and mount the sign, buy the rock, and pay to have it all assembled? I am sure that there could have been better uses of the money. Perhaps grading Optimist Park so that it does not flood all the time, or better yet adding some equipment to it?
